Book III - Chapter 4
Treebeard

Trudging deeper into the forest, the hobbits make for a hilltop, from which they hope to gain a view of the surrounding landscape. Whilst discussing the merits of Fangorn Forest, their conversation is interrupted by a deep, slow voice. A large hand placed on the shoulder of each hobbit and they find themselves slowly lifted in the air until they are gazing into a most extraordinary face. The being introduces himself as Treebeard, leader of the Ents of Fangorn Forest. The Ents are ancient guardians who walk this most ancient and mysterious of forests, seldom leaving its borders. The hobbits introduce themselves and, after he is convinced they are not of evil intent, Treebeard takes Pippin and Merry to one of his homes in the forest and gives them food and shelter.

After hearing the tale of the hobbits, Treebeard voices his own concerns about the doings of Saruman. The news brought by Merry and Pippin convinces him that something must be done about the wizard and he decides to summon his fellow Ents to Derndingle, where they will hold a council, or an `Entmoot`. After several days of discussion, the Ents resolve to march on Isengard and declare war on Saruman. It seems to the two hobbits that the whole forest is on the move. Night finds them on a ridge overlooking Nan Curunir, the Valley of Saruman.
