Noldorin elf , daughter of Finarfin and sister of Finrod. Wife of Celeborn, mother of Celebrian and grandmother of Arwen. At the rebellion of the Noldor, Galadriel was the only elven woman to stand for leaving Aman, though she did not take part in the Oath of Fëanor. She yearned to see the wide lands of Middle-earth and wished to rule a realm of her own there. Her father turned back before the crossing of the Helcaraxë, but she followed her brother into Exile with the people of Fingolfin. In Middle-earth she dwelt with her brother in Tol Sirion, but by the time he moved to Nargothrond she was already living in Doriath. There she met and married Celeborn, kinsman of Thingol. She learned much of Middle-earth from the people of Doriath, especially Melian, and she in turn told them of the wonders of Valinor, even revealing the reasons for the Exile of the Noldor. After the Fall of Doriath, Galadriel and Celeborn lived with Círdan at the Mouths of Sirion. When Morgoth was finally overcame by the Valar in the War of Wrath, Galdariel was banned from returning to Aman because she was the last surviving Noldorin leader. She and her husband dwelled for a while in Lindon and later in Eregion where she was given one of the Three Elven Rings of Power, Nenya. In the Third Age, she used the power of the Ring to strengthen the Elven realm of Lothlórien where she and her people remained effectively shut off from the world around them, only occasionally venturing out to aid in the wars against Sauron and Angmar. In the late Third Age, Frodo Baggins of The Shire brought the One Ring into her realm and, to her great surprise, offered it to her. Though she was greatly tempted by the power of the Ring, she resisted its lure and refused it. It was mostly for this selfless act that Galadriel’s ban from Aman was eventually lifted. She also aided the Company of the Ring by giving them great gifts, including the Phial of Galadriel and allowing Frodo and Sam a glimpse into her Mirror. After the War of the Ring, in TA 3021, Galadriel left Middle-earth and accompanied Elrond, Gandalf and Frodo by ship to the Undying Land. Galadriel was very beautiful and had long golden hair. Among the many names given to here were Lady of Lórien, the Lady of the Wood, the White Lady, Sorceress of the Goden Wood (Wormtongue), and the Mistress of Magic (Faramir). |
