Athelas Print this article

Wild plant of Middle-Earth originally introduced from Númenor. In ancient days athelas was known for its healing properties and its uplifting odor. By the late Third Age it was considered only a fragrant weed of no apparent use. It grew sparsely, usually near abandoned settlements of the Men of the North. It was more abundant in southern Gondor, growing wild in the woods of Lossarnach.

Aragorn was familiar with athelas´s healing and painkilling properties. He used the plant to help Frodo after Weathertop and the Mines of Moria. Athelas was also critical in the revival of Faramir, Éowyn and Merry in the Houses of Healing in Minas Tirith.

The plant had long leaves. When bruised or crushed they gave off a sweet and pungent fragrance.

Also called kingsfoil and asëa aranion
