Glorfindel was riding Asfaloth along the East Road when he found Strider and the four hobbits making towards Rivendell. As a precaution, he put Frodo into Asfaloth’s saddle. This turned out to be very wise, for when the Black Riders attacked the group, it was only by the speed of Asfaloth that Frodo won through to the Ford of Bruinen.
